City of Merced offices will be closed Thursday to observe the Independence Day holiday.
The city will open a cooling center at the Merced Civic Center from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 4. The cooling center will remain open until Sunday when temperatures are expected to drop below 100 degrees.
There will not be trash collection on Thursday, city officials said. Trash will instead be picked up on Friday.
The Merced Police Department and the Merced Fire Department will have additional staff to help make sure everyone has a "safe and sane" Fourth of July, city officials said.
City health officials say that during the hot weather, everyone should drink plenty of fluids, avoid caffeine and alcohol, dress in cool clothes, wear a hat and stay out of the sun whenever possible.
