'Cap & Town' Celebration: Friday, May 11

The 'Cap & Town' celebration will return to Downtown Merced on Friday, May 11.

The event, which runs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., is the city's salute to the area's graduates .

Families can enjoy food, dancing and music. There will be bounce houses, pony rides for kids and community performances.

The celebration will be held on Main Street, from M Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

The 'Salute to Mothers' event will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Applegate Park.

The community is invited to enjoy a variety of self-care, stress reduction and education venues.

There will be raffle prizes, music and family entertainment.

Dollar General Opening in Merced

Dollar General Opening in Merced

Dollar General will celebrate the grand opening of its Merced store on Saturday, March 31.

The Merced location will the the discount retailer's 10,000th store.

Dollar General executives and local officials will kick off the celebration with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m., followed by a day filled with fun for the entire family.

Customers will have the opportunity to get a free make-up consultation from L’Oreal and Maybelline experts, have a photo taken with a favorite character such as Sponge Bob, Bimbo Bear or the Energizer Bunny and sample a wide variety of products sold at Dollar General. Other activities include Gamesa soccer ball activation, race car simulator and inflatable games. 

The first 500 customers will receive a free ham and tote bag filled with samples and coupons.

Dollar General is located at 1729 West Highway 140.

55 restored aircrafts and many other artifacts will be on display at Castle Air Museum's Open Cockpit Day.

The event will be held on Sunday, May 27, 2012.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

BIG READ KICKS OFF MARCH 15 WITH CELEBRITY READ-A-THON

 

The Fresno County Public Library kicks off its sixth Big Read, which this year features Jack London’s The Call of the Wild, with a celebrity read-a-thon at the Valley Animal Center on March 15 from 10 am to 3 pm.  Celebrities include local media personalities and community leaders.

 

The public is invited to bring copies of The Call of the Wild to read along with the celebrity readers.

 

The Library was awarded a $17,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for The Call of the Wild.  The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 31 selected books from U.S.

Kohl's Kids Scholarship Program

Kohl's Kids Scholarship Program

Only two more weeks to nominate a special kid for the 2012 Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. Kohl’s recognizes kids ages six to 18 who have made a positive impact on their community through volunteerism. Nominations will be accepted now through March 15th.  Over $440,000 will be awarded to over two thousand kids.

Volunteers Sought for 25th Anniversary Kids Day

Volunteers are needed to take to the streets on Tuesday, March 6 to sell special editions of The Fresno Bee for the 25th anniversary Kids day event benefiting Children's Hospital Central California. The event is sponsored by a number of media organizations and Children's Hospital.

Volunteers are needed throughout the day, but particularly in the early morning hours of March 6.

Papers are sold on Valley street corners from 5:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Kids Day editions of the Fresno Bee feature heartwarming patient stories and photographs. They are sold in 20 different cities throughout the Central Valley.

This year's fundraising goal is $450,000.
