Puppy Gets New Paw, Now Prancing For Joy

A dog who lost a paw is prancing and playing nearly as good as new, thanks to a North Valley clinic.

Skip the puppy was born with a bone deformity that ultimately caused one of his front paws to fall off.

A veterinarian was able to save the rest of his leg but left him with a limp, until Wednesday when technicians at Hanger Clinic in Merced fitted Skip with a custom-made prosthetic device.

The device allows him to run and play like a normal puppy for the first time in his life.

"This is raising awareness that animals can use prosthesis," says prosthetist Spencer Greene. "It's been done for a while but especially with the movie 'Dolphin Tale' more people have realized that it's just an opportunity."

Hanger Clinic is the same company that made the prosthetic tail for Winter, a bottlenose dolphin who lost her tail in 2005.

Winter's story came to life on the big screen last fall in the feature film "Dolphin Tale."

Winton Boy Mauled by Family Pit Bull

Winton Boy Mauled by Family Pit Bull

A 3-year-old boy is recovering after he was attacked by the family dog, Merced County Sheriff's Deputies said.

It happened just before 5 p.m. Monday at a home along Royalty Avenue, near Tokay Circle, in Winton.

Investigators say the boy was inside the house, when his brother opened the patio door, and their pit bull charged in. They say the dog went straight for the boy, biting his head and face.

Family members were able to chase the dog outside until deputies got to the home.

The boy was flown to a Fresno hospital. Deputies say he is expected to recover.

The dog is being held at Merced County Animal Control. After being tested for rabies, the dog will be euthanized.

Investigators say criminal charges will not be filed at this time because there was no evidence of neglect, and the dog has no history of aggressive behavior.

Protect your Pets this 4th of July!

Protect your Pets this 4th of July!

Americans love a patriotic Fourth of July party including lots of family, friends, food and loud fireworks. To our pets, especially dogs, it is a nightmare. The busiest week of the year at animal shelters is after the 4th of July holiday! The Valley Oak SPCA is fortunate to have solutions and tips to relieve stress and worry for pet owners and their pets.

The four-legged family members have a keen sense of hearing and the blasts from the fireworks can cause them distress and be disorienting. Your furry friend will try to escape the sounds and may start exhibiting some extreme nervous behaviors such as: excessive barking, digging, shaking, trembling, running around in circles, running into doors, hiding or worst of all running away.

The week of July 4 is the busiest week at animal shelters nationwide.
