Merced College Presents Two Modern Plays

Story submitted by Merced College

The Merced College Theater Department ventures into the Theater of the Absurd this weekend with plays by Samuel Beckett and Sam Shepard.

Beckett’s “Endgame,” one of his most acclaimed plays, takes place in a post-apocalyptic interior as characters Hamm and Clov entertain and annoy one another while trying to determine their fate in this life.  Shepard’s “Red Cross,” one of his earliest plays, was written after Shepard had read Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.  “Red Cross,” which launched Shepard’s successful career in playwriting, is an Obie-winning short play telling the story of a couple of hypochondriacs, living in a facility of some kind in the forest, and their daily visit from the maid.

The two plays feature Merced College students Jordan Bremer, Jason Best, Amber Rain Fowler, Matthew Sanchez, Julian Bremer, Sarah Villareal, and Genifurr Ryan.

Kids Left Stranded When Bus Drivers Fail To Show

Kids Left Stranded When Bus Drivers Fail To Show

Dozens of kids were left out in the cold and rain Thursday morning when their school buses never showed up to take them to school.

It happened in Merced when two-thirds of the Merced Union School District's bus drivers called in sick Wednesday night after reportedly being laid off, according to the Merced Sun-Star.

KMPH News caught up with one of those drivers.

Kathy Upson told us, although she was sick, there is something she wants school district officials to know.

"I would like them to reconsider what they're doing. It's not just us bus drivers that are being affected. It's going to cause a ripple effect throughout the whole community starting with the kids and their dropout rate and their truancy rate, parents having to choose between going to work and taking their child to school on a day like today," Upson said.
